Experience The Last Of The True Wild With An Antarctic Cruise, a travel article from Emmett Travel Deals Online

Drake’s passage is the foreboding gatekeeper that divides the last bit of south America from the Antarctic continent. With terrible weather, colliding current streams and absolutely no land to calm the water, it is a rough 400 mile stretch. I only hoped to see icebergs and penguins. Other than that, I harbored no concept as to what may await, no feel for the geography, the politics, and perhaps more than anything else, no idea of the sheer power of Antarctica.

While prior to setting sail we had been intimidated by the potential rage of Drake’s Passage, the sea gods were kind on the trip out.Sailing for home, however, the passage was clearly the terrible place we?d been told about. Our first morning in Antarctica was met with a grey, calm sea. Your one-stop resource on antarctica cruise ship is waiting for you.

All we could see off in the distance were gray-brown mountains covered in snow, but soon enough we had our first ice sighting. Small sections of ice rested on the water like frozen marshmallows.I grabbed my camera and threw on the bright red parka the ship had supplied. Then I hurried out into the polar air.

We had spent the day rushing outside whenever anyone spotted a whale, dolphin, or penguin. We’d also listened to lectures the ship’s naturalist provided. Passing by the huge ice blocks in our tiny inflatable raft was truly thrilling. We were finally on our way to shore. Penguins lined the shoreline and contemplated the water. They stood on an icy, rocky island and considered us as we floated by.

Suddenly, we found ourselves surrounded by penguins. A group of researchers shared this bit of land in Paradise Harbor with these disheveled and gentle little penguins. Many waddled about very purposefully in every direction. Some of the penguins seemed to enjoy watching us as much as we were enjoying watching them. Because of their age, the majority of penguin chicks were now on their own. Some of the chicks were decidedly in denial about this. The birds eat krill from the ocean, and have had it regurgitated directly into their mouths by their parents until recently. Further resources about adventure antarctica cruises are located there.

They?d also started to molt. Because some of the gray down still remained in hard to reach spots, the birds looked as if they were wearing earmuffs or hats. Others looked like they?d let a three year-old cut their hair. As we made our way back to the ship, we navigated through some of the ice floating through the bay. We even passed right by a jagged icy mountain on which a loan seal was stretching itself. Seeing him and his huge, pink tongued yawn [perhaps an editorial comment on how much he cared about us] was the perfect ending to a really wonderful day.

Penguins are always so very charming. The waddle brought smiles to all of our faces. Their appearance of wearing formal tuxedos is a funny paradox with their clown-like webbed, orange feet. Because these islands were less dirt and more rock or ice, the penguins tended to be very clean and neat looking. And to make them even more fashionable, they had a thin black line under their chins, giving them the impression of round cheeks.

Mysterious Antarctica, a travel article from Emmett Travel Deals Online

Some people will travel just about anywhere. This was the idea that led a businessman and brainstormer to organize a charted flight, the first one in the world, heading for the Antarctic on February 13, 1877. For this lively electronics executive who was 33 years old, looking at a map one morning made him wonder why there are no flights made by a regular aircraft going to Antarctica and returning on the same day.

What he did after realizing how is one of the developed countries capable of providing this kind of trip was calling the premier flag carrier in November of 1976 and arranging for it to charter a 707. In the beginning they thought that everything was a pawn. Aside from not being able to receive this kind of request before, the carrier also saw minimal financial gain in the plan. He was able to change the mind of the charter manager in the end because of his persistence and seriousness. Learn more on the topic of Antarctica Cruise.

Selling plane tickets was no easy task to accomplish at first. When it comes to the first passenger list for the charter there were only six people. Later on word began to travel around and a paper even published a story about it. Having their story published in the paper led to lots of business headed their way with many reservations. In a spam of four hours they already had enough passengers for a 707. When the day ended, they had passengers enough to fill three 707s.

Two 747s were requested from the airline after such an amazingly large response. According to him, they thought that he was somewhat mad. They did manage to get one jumbo, though.

From the airline spokesman came the advice of viewing the Antarctic during the best possible time and this is when there is clear weather during the summer in the Southern hemisphere running from November to February. Any viewing conditions have no complete guarantees and when it comes to visibility there is always the risk basis. He also noted that no additional safety precautions are necessary. It has been said by the superintendent of’s major airline that the pattern for the flight is routine. As a person looking for Adventure Antarctica Cruises you should visit that site.

In spite of being able to accomplish the first flight from his country’s flag carrier headed to South America this 22 year veteran sees this trip differently. He said he didn’t know what to expect to see. Pure and clean and massive are the words to describe it. Other than the shades of blue running from pale to indigo, the white was the whitest of whites.

Spectacular is the way to describe it. Much elation was felt by him and he wanted to see everything that could be seen.

Seating arrangements were swapped every now and then especially for those with window seats. During the trip they used a computer system that helped them with viewing intervals. What they did was develop a flying pattern that allowed for maximum viewing potential anywhere on board. When they did this, they took into account the possibility of having very bad weather but still being able to provide the best view for all of the kinds of Antarctic scenery which included mountains, ice plateaus, coastline, and the glaciers.

It took approximately 12 1/2 hours to fly over the area. The flight is not purely over Antarctica and so while waiting for the view there are guest lectures, movies, and some games. Other than its customary cabin service, the airline offers full course meals too.

That time off is so badly needed, but nothing could possibly be worst than making travel plans and not realizing that a passport to Cancun is needed until it is too late. People are getting all kinds of bad information about this right now and not being prepared can be the difference in having a great trip or getting to the airport and being forced to turn right back around.

The obvious answer is that since Cancun is in Mexico, and since Mexico is not in the U.S, then yes a passport would be necessary for a Cancun vacation. However, it was not until very recently that passports were necessary for travel to border countries, and even now they are not universally necessary. The type of travel dictates whether or not a passport is required.

Everything changed in regards to travel in June of 2009. The United States went from requiring nothing more than a driver’s license or birth certificate to cross back in from border countries to requiring passport documentation. This is a significant change and one that many people are still not fully aware of.

Anyone that is now traveling out of the United States to areas such as Cancun will almost always have to have a passport now. The new laws require that all land, sea and air travel passengers have a valid US Passport to re-enter the United States when coming in from any destination. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule.

Travelers on cruises to certain international destinations are not required to carry passports provided that the cruise is deemed “closed loop.” A closed loop cruise is any cruise that starts and finishes in the same port or same port country. However, it is important to note that these closed loop exemptions only apply to cruises that begin and end in the United States, and only on cruises that visit certain international countries.

Countries that are accepted into this exception are such location as: Bermuda, The Virgin Islands, Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean Island locations. Because all areas are not fully accepted, it is always good to check with either the State Department or the travel agent to make sure that the destination does or does not require a passport for re-entry.

Citizens have been screaming at Homeland Security from day one about these new rules, but they are in place to protect everyone. Cancun has always been a location that US citizens could pretty much travel to and from without any hassle. In all honesty, the hassles will remain minimal; there are just some extra security measures in place to make the borders more secure.

Anyone traveling to Cancun from the United States will almost certainly need to fill out a U.S. passport application. The only time a passport to Cancun is not necessary is when a person is traveling to Cancun in a closed loop cruise. Any other form of travel will require that a valid passport is in hand or that person will risk not being able to enter the foreign country.

Seventy thousand birds call this one-square-mile area home. They may only measure thigh-high to me, but they have a much taller attitude as they waddle, slip and slide in their rocky abode.

They’re constantly cleaning themselves, getting angry with other penguins who get in their nests, and sending off seals who aren’t invited. The parents will feed their little ones (who aren’t black and white yet, simply brown and fluffy) predigested food. Penguins are designed to be feeding machines. After a penguin comes back from the ocean with food, they will peck and bow ritualistically before their mate goes off into the waters.Contact this website if you require information on cruise travel to antarctica.

Though we expect them to be, penguins are not cute. They smell bad, they’re loud, and they can be very pushy.Despite this, they are enthralling creatures and having the ability to meet them up close and walk among them is an opportunity which brings more and more people to Antarctica, the enormous, icy land that caps the bottom of the Earth.

You can plan on seeing many more animals in Antarctica than just the penguins. There are many other creatures, such as dolphins, sea birds, whales, albatross, and seals, as well as an amazing looking landscape and seascape that will never be forgotten. Some of the cathedrals in Europe sport spires that are much shorter than the ones found on glaciers in Antarctica. You’ll also experience something that relatively few people have ever seen by taking a trip to this unusual, distant land.Antarctica is one of the most beautiful places has to offer us.

Getting to the continent is a major section of the adventure. The trip, though rarely taken, will be stimulating, unique and costly. If traveling from the US, you’ll fly for nearly twenty hours to reach Ushuaia, Argentina’s southernmost port. You could also choose to fly into Punta Arenas, Chile or Cape Town, South Africa. Christchurch, New Zealand is another point at which you could then catch an ice-rated expedition cruise ship.As soon as you make it to one of these cities, you are going to have another several days of traveling by cruise to make it to Antarctica. Further information on antarctic travel can be found there.

Antarctica is bigger than the USand Mexico put together. The continent of Antarctica has ice shelves on all sides, which measure out to an area which is larger than Greenland, Europe and all of North America combined. This comprises about 70% of all of the fresh water on Earth, and the area is so massive that it deforms the surface of the Earth.Cruises last from ten to twenty-eight days. You can also choose from ships that host between 75 and 200 passengers. The ships are vastly different than those you?ll find on Caribbean or Mediterranean cruises. You?ll get lectures and slide shows about Antarctica instead of casinos.

These ships will put their passengers onto rafts so that they can approach the rookeries of penguins and colonies of seals, or to get them to research stations. At these stations, scientists investigate a wide variety of things, from the nature of the ozone layer to how life can sustain in Antarctic climates.

In order to preserve Antarctica for learning, the original five signors of the international Antarctica agreement said the continent should remain commerce, border and nuclear ?free. These five countries have research facilities on the continent.

There are those who fear that bringing tourists into Antarctica is an invitation to deadly accidents.Flyover tourism was ended in 1979 with the crash of a DC-10. All 257 passengers aboard the plane were killed.Environmentalists see tourists as a threat to Antarctica?s fragile ecosystem. The limitation of Antarctic tourism is debated by scientists, environmentalists, and politicians alike. They do wish to keep Antarctica safe.Alternately, some feel that by exposing Antarctica to people, these people will become moved to involve themselves in its protection.

Currently, there are no tourism regulations for Antarctica. When you do go there, you must be held to the basic ideals of eco-tourism.Leave the natives alone, take only pictures and leave only footprints.Pack clothing that can be layered. You may rely on your ship for a down-filled parka, but you?ll want your own waterproof, waffle-soled boots. Bring lots of extra socks.Make sure you have your camera. Also make sure you?ve packed your sunglasses and strong sunscreen. You can?t run to the corner convenience store in Antarctica.

The Frozen Land Of Antarctica, a travel article from Emmett Travel Deals Online

Many of the most experienced travelers in the world still perceive the continent of Antarctica as a mysterious, distant land. Scientific labs are scattered across its huge, black void. What most don’t realize is how unique Antarctica is.For one thing, war and even weapons have been banned there by agreement of the world’s nations, the United States included.

More than 163 years after being discovered in the early 1800’s by sealers, Antarctica is still a whole continent that is almost entirely unfamiliar to people. It is a very large continent, as big as both Mexico and the United States combined. As big as Antarctica is, nearly ninety-eight percent of its mass is trapped underneath a colossal glacial mass. One measure of Antarctica’s uniqueness is that its resources are virtually untouched.Further resources about antarctica cruise ships are located there.

Among these resources which are trapped beneath a thick layer of ice are krill, which are rich in protein, oil from offshore locations, and minerals. The peacefulness of Antarctica is one of its most particular components. It as been amicably presided over for quite some time, which will hopefully remain unchanged by any imminent political forces.

Between the 1920s and the 1940s, it was a continent that saw competition between various nations. The cold and the storms and the dark finally convinced those governments that it would be too costly to fight in Antarctica. The continent is just too menacing to support military involvement. The reigning peace in Antarctica was formalized by the formation of the Antarctic Treaty in 1859.

Twelve nations were in Antarctica for the International Geophysical Year of 1957-1958. These same 12 nations concluded the document known as The Antarctic Treaty, a short document. The most important international and national goal of pursuing science and how to function in the extremes of Antarctica on a peaceful basis was established during the first International Geophysical Year. Here is further info on Recommended Antarctica Cruises.

Included in the treaty is the demilitarization of the entire continent. The only reason a military force or army can be deployed to Antarctica would be to aid scientific exploration. The treaty further forbade all military maneuvers, together with all testing of atomic weaponry and any storage of radioactive waste. The agreement further has a clause allowing unilateral on-site inspection, which is the only such arms control treaty provision in force.Under the treaty, a scientific expedition has complete permission to go anywhere on the continent despite any claims that may have been made by any nation, so no area is off-limits – even in Antarctica’s offshore water regions.

To this point, the United Nations has had no direct involvement in Antarctica. The countries that signed the Antarctic Treaty have in fact discouraged any actions by the United Nations. The extremely sensitive use of resources that are now being discussed by the participating nations, environment protection, science, and exploration have the treaty members feeling very comfortable with the fine system of management in place.

Not too long ago, political observers feared that Antarctica would play some kind of a role in the Southern Hemisphere between developing and wealthy industrial nations. Today though, a different phenomenon has begun to take shape.A number of the significant industrializing nations, a few of them in the Latin America group, as well as China and India, have stated that they wish to sign on to the Antarctic Treaty.

Some Latin American countries have already recently become a part of the treaty as “acceding powers.”Although they are not allowed to vote, since they do not have scientific endeavors in the continent, they consent to be governed by the rules. In this way, the industrializing nations do not remain outside the tent hurling rocks at it, but instead are included under the big tent.

Deciding to take a cruise with your family might be just the thing you need. Cruises are renowned for their convenient and totally customizable experience, so if you’re looking for a quick getaway, a cruise may be the best option. All you need to do is apply for your passport, grab the sunscreen and a bikini, and you are ready to go.

Cruises are one of the travel industry’s best kept secrets. The perks that come along with taking a cruise might make you wish you could cruise to your mother-in-law’s house, as opposed to taking an overcrowded airplane or enduring a 14 hour car drive. Cruises are required to follow very strict safety codes, and this keeps you and your family safe. A 24-hour security team is constantly on patrol, meaning a woman can go on a midnight stroll, hit her favorite bar, or explore anywhere on deck without fear. Your children are protected too with fun and educational supervised activities that are always available.

The cruise experience includes an huge array of fun activities for you and your family. Everyday provides a new opportunity, so the only problem is deciding what you want to try first. Adults can hit nightclubs and bars, while children can watch movies and play games. There are arts and crafts, dance lessons, lectures, and entertainment available everyday. The restaurant diversity is also worth noting. Whether you decide on a candlelit dinner for two or a fun night for the entire family, there is a plethora of options available. With so many options, this ensures no two people on a cruise have the exact same experience.

Passport prices are going up, so for many, the cost of a vacation ends up being to much, especially for large families. With the breach of the $100 point, the cost of a passport can ultimately discourage a family from taking a much needed get away. However, there is another option. The passport card, first created on July 14, 2008, is a cheaper, more family friendly way to travel, especially for cruise vacations. At only $30, it ends up being a fraction of the price of a regular passport, but comes with very similar benefits. A passport card can be used for land or sea travel between the United States and Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, and the Caribbean, allowing for a variety of travel opportunities.

Sometimes the stress of booking a plane, a hotel, a rental car, gas, food, and entertainment can be too overwhelming for a family, thus making vacation something to dread. Cruising allows you get everything under one price, creating a convenient and comfortable vacation experience. With everything clumped together, you and your family can relax without having to worry about exorbitant extra costs. This sort of one-stop shopping makes booking a cruise easy.

Sometimes you just need to get away. A cruise is the symbol of convenience, all you need is a passport or pass port card and a sense of adventure, and you are ready. Swim with dolphins, see a beautiful Caribbean sunset, or just sunbathe on deck, whatever you want to do is there, and the way to get there is easy for you and your family. Just apply for your pasport, put on your bikini, and set sail.

A lot of people are now choosing to have destination weddings where they combine their wedding and their honeymoon into one trip. This is a great option for the couple who does not want a huge wedding and perhaps only have their closest friends and family go to the special occasion. This is very popular for 2nd marriages and more mature couples. A lot of couples may want to get married in a place where they had a specialnice vacation as well or maybe the spot where the engagement took place. Getting married on a cruise ship is another kind of destination wedding that is popular now. This article will explore the various cruise line options for weddings and the logistics such as getting from the airport using Port Canaveral transportation or wedding limo service Orlando.

The 1st cruise line is called Carnival cruise lines. They are a favorite cruise line that has cruises all over including the Caribbean, Mexico and other locations too. They are known for being more affordable than most of the other ships while maintaining a good level of service for those on board. For the more budget minded couple, this may be a perfect choice where they have 3 various wedding packages to get married on board with varying degrees of things included such as floral arrangements, the the number of guests at the wedding, and photography as a few of the examples. They also have the destination choice where you can have your wedding ceremony on one of the tropical locations where the boat stops for those who do not wish to be married on board.

The 2nd cruise line is Norwegian Cruise line and that has been around since 1966 and they are best known for the Freestyle cruise which states there are no set times to eat or assigned seating for meals and no formal attire is needed on a Norwegian cruise. They also have a variety of wedding packages but all of them include a wedding planner to assist you with all of the details, flowers, champagne, music and photography whether it is on board or at one of the stops along the way. This cruise line appeals to those that wish for a more relaxed, less structured cruise experience.

Another cruise ship is the Princess cruise line that the old favorite TV program, The Love Boat was based on. This is the only cruise line that provides their own wedding chapel on board the ship to accommodate the several couples who want to be married on board. This is the most popular choice versus getting married at one of the destinations but that may also be done on Princess Cruise line as well for those who have always dreamed of a beach wedding. The wedding packages have the unique wedding cam that provides a live feed on the internet for those loved ones who could not go on the cruise and may watch the wedding happen live.

What better way to go on a great trip and be more romantic than being married at sea? There is a cruise line for everyone.

It’s an unforgettable sight to see them all waddling about their rookery, a square mile of mud and rock, all neatly pressed out in their tight fitted tuxedos.

They constantly preen as they defend their pebble made nests from an unwanted neighbor, the seal hunting skuas and big clumsy seals. The chicks, scramble about and force their beaks into their parents’ mouths for any undigested food. antarctica tours information is only a click away.

Penguins work around the clock to feed their young. When one parent returns from the ocean with food, a ritual of pecks and bows ensues before the mate heads off for their turn at sea.

Penguins are actually not really as cute as people think. They are foul-smelling and noisy but also fascinating at the same time. But visitors arrive to Antarctica every year to be able to stand with them. The Antarctic really is at the edge of the world.

There’s a lot more to see in the Antarctic than penguins. There are other sea birds, dolphins, seals, albatross and glaciers and a sea of icebergs that resemble beasts. If you’re looking to learn about cruises to antartica, visit their site for more details.

Very few people have been to this wonderful place before, maybe only as many as the number of fans at a football match. Antarctica leaves us wondering if there is any other place on Earth that is holier than this. The thrill begins right from the time you set out. Though a bit on the costlier side, this trip is extremely fascinating. From the U.S., the journey to Antarctica has two legs; a 20-hour flight to Ushuaia in Argentina or Punta Arenas in Chile, Cape Town in South Africa, or Christchurch in New Zealand followed by a sea voyage to the icy continent. These are alternative points of embarkation where they board ice-rated expedition cruise ships. The only way to reach the big icy continent is by enduring a journey of several days through rough seas.

Even though the world map shows Antarctica as roughly the size of the U.S. and Mexico put together, if we consider the icy shelves around it, the area is actually double that size. With a thickness of two miles and exerting a massive pressure on the earth?s surface, this vast ice mass holds 70 percent of the Earth?s fresh water.

This February, from the 10th to the 18th, a total of nine vessels will be operating different tours to Antarctica. Only one ship carries 400 passengers while all the others are relatively small and can carry only 75 to 200 passengers. The ambiance on board these ships is conducive to gaining knowledge about Antarctica?s history and natural beauty.

Zodiac rafts take passengers to seal colonies, penguin rookeries and to research stations where scientists are busy studying the several mysteries of life in Antarctica.

Parties to the Antarctic Treaty, the U.S., Argentina, Chile, China, Russia and a few other parties maintain the research stations. As a result of the Antarctic Treaty, participating countries have voluntarily kept Antarctica free of borders, have stayed away from commercial and nuclear activity and are using the place as an environmentally clean laboratory. Many research stations encourage visitors to come over and see their facilities first hand while others see this as an avoidable activity.

At a frozen plain at Hope Bay is Argentina?s Esperanza station in which tourists can freely wander through the town of bungalows the adjoining recreational areas, the church, school as well as through their work areas. All the children around, the military staff and their dogs, the meteorologists and the penguins seem to be living together harmoniously.

Chile’s Teniente Marsh station, the largest of nine bases on King George’s Island, has a post office, provisions shop and restaurant. In the same neighborhood, you can buy T-shirts, souvenirs and curios at China’s Great Wall Station. Anvers Island poses a unique problem in the sense that the United States’ Palmer Station allows only certain pre-selected ships to stop by at specific times. At most places, tourists are not allowed inside residential and work areas.

Cruising to Antarctica takes a lot of planning and decision making. You want to pick a cruise ship that provides for all your needs on the trip. All Antarctic cruises have advantages and this article explains how they can help decide which suits you best.

It is important for you to know what size Antarctic cruise ship you want for the trip. You can take about 50 to 100 people on a smaller seagoing vessel. Big ships have no problem carrying between 200 and 3000 persons. Compare the upsides and drawbacks when selecting a decent Antarctic tour ship. cruises to antarctica

Most of the games and amusements done on land can also be found on cruise vessels. There is a pool for relaxing as well as casinos and gyms as alternative options for entertainment. A doctor is available to see you if you are sick as well as a place to get primped. Small ship Antarctica cruises tend to be warmer than their large ship counterpart.

Large ships seldom reach the banks. It is because of the large number of tourists they hold and the limits imposed by environmental laws. If sightseeing is your idea of a great vacation then a cruise might not be the right fit. You need to review the regulations on cruise lines if you want to go ashore and are traveling via larger vessels. Cruise lines also have a short timeframe for staying berthed at various areas.

There is more time for exploration and enjoyment aboard smaller ships with frequent stopovers. They are anchored close to bank which means more time for you to see wildlife and visit distant sites. There are also fewer people to worry about. great antarctic cruise

The reception is warmer on a smaller cruise ship. Cruise staff and passengers are also easy to adjust to. Pursue your hobbies like mountain hiking and scuba diving or other activities while cruising. No payment is required to see a physician in the clinic aboard smaller vessels. This feature is not free on larger vessels.

Protection and security are prime considerations. Ice ratings for minor ships are generally high. They are reinforced for the ice so it is easier to avoid damage from icebergs and related obstacles. Ask if the cruise vessel features complete equipment for taking care of emergency cases. Seagoing vessels have regulations to satisfy and this is one of them.

Traveling on smaller vessels can enlighten you in different ways. Your experience is made more colorful by info provided by Antarctica historians about the region. It is important to look for a company that specialized in Antarctica Cruises. You up your odds of having an enjoyable trip this way. Small and big vessels are not the same and if you know how one is different from the other it will be easier for you to pick the most suitable choice. You would definitely want a memorable cruise experience.

Passport Applications For Cruises Are A Necessity, a travel article from Emmett Travel Deals Online

Going on cruises has always been fun. It is a traveling party that never seems to stop. Regardless of whether the boat is in some exotic port or traveling the high seas to the next destination, there is always something going on. However, knowing about expedited US passports for cruises is always recommended for anyone getting ready to travel in this manner.

The traveler that is only traveling within the United States borders will still not need a passport. International travel, regardless of where it goes, will generally require that every passenger has a passport in order to be able to get off of the boat in the varying countries. It is always best to do some research and see exactly what travel laws are pertinent to the trip that is being considered.

First and foremost, everyone needs to understand that many of the travel laws have changed quite dramatically over the last year or so. Prior to June 2009, there was no need to have a passport to travel to places like Mexico or Canada. Because of many of the events over the last ten years or so, these rules have now changed.

Obviously, passports are required for any cruise that has an international final destination. This also applies to all border countries. For example, a passport would be necessary for a one-way cruise from Miami to Cancun, although round-trip cruises have different laws.

Additionally, any cruise that starts in another country would require the use of a passport. This should be pretty obvious because a cruise starting in another country often requires international air travel. There are never exceptions for the need of a passport when it comes to air travel. Passports are also now required for all border crossings, so a passport is necessary for any cruise departing from an international port.

Currently, there are cruises available that are known as “closed loop.” Basically, this means that the cruise starts at one point and returns to the very same point. This is actually what most of us would end up going on, unless we were taking a ship to move to another country. Because these voyages start and end in the same port, there are rules in place that pertain to only this type of travel.

Passports are generally not required for closed loop cruises. In place of passports for cruises deemed closed loop, adult passengers are only required to bring a valid driver’s license and birth certificate. Closed loop voyage passport and document exemption laws only pertain to travel from a U.S port to ports in Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, the Virgin Islands, and select Caribbean Islands. Anyone unsure of the passport requirements for closed loop cruises to certain Caribbean Islands should consult with the cruise company, their travel agency or the State Department website. Anyone that has a passport would be wise to bring it along just in case.

It is always smart to read up on where the trip is going to see if US passports for cruises are required for that specific trip. Now as we said, even if expedited American passports are not required, it may be a smart move to at least have a passport card when traveling anywhere outside the United States. It is better to be safe than sorry and having extra documentation is never a bad thing for a traveler.

That Mexican vacation is all booked and it is only one month to go until nothing but sun, surf, bikinis, and margaritas. Everything is planned, everything is taken care of, unless, wait…do I need a passport to Cancun? This question is not as simple as it seems, and although the answer is almost certainly yes, there are a few different factors to consider.

While it is not generally assumed that if a traveler is leaving US soil for any reason, they will need a passport. With Cancun being located in a foreign country, it would only make sense that a passport would be needed to go there. This is probably true in most cases, but there are still a few circumstances when a passport may actually not be needed.

New passport laws that were put into place in June 2009 have made things a bit confusing for many people. Prior to that date, a passport was not always necessary when traveling to US border countries. Up until that point, as long as a traveler had a valid driver’s license, they could pretty much head to countries such as Mexico and Canada at will.

Anyone that is now traveling out of the United States to areas such as Cancun will almost always have to have a passport now. The new laws require that all land, sea and air travel passengers have a valid US Passport to re-enter the United States when coming in from any destination. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule.

The one loophole in the new passport laws are related to trips categorized as “closed loop” voyages. This is a cruise ship trip that starts in a US port and ends up in a US port. Because the traveler is not technically leaving the ship, meaning one-way travel, they can get away with only having a driver’s license on their trip. However, there are restrictions involved in the actual destinations of these cruises.

Approved countries that this rule applies to are such destinations as Bermuda, Canada and the Virgin Islands. To be safe, it is always recommended that you check with the State Department or your travel agent as they will both be up to date on the rules regarding the cruise ship itinerary destinations. A quick phone call can give some piece of mind.

Homeland Security is often cited as the reason passports are now necessary for travel to border countries. Although it can be an inconvenience, it is better to have safe borders and a minor hassle than porous borders and an easy pass. Since passports are always necessary for international flight, and always have been, anyone flying to Cancun likely will not notice a change. American citizens flying to and from Mexico are generally not subjected to a lot of scrutiny.

Having said all of that, it is still always better to have too much documentation than not enough. Obtaining a American passport application to Cancun will give assurances that there will be no problems. In you do not want to get a regular passport, a passport card can be used instead. Regardless, anyone planning to travel would do wise to obtain a US passport sooner or later to avoid the long waits or extra fees that will have to be paid to get one on short notice.

One common passport question that often arises for people considering international travel is the question of whether or not a passport is required for border nations. In America, this question applies to Mexico and Canada. Currently, the answer is yes, a passport to Canada or Mexico is needed when traveling. Anyone thinking of traveling outside the US borders will need a valid passport.

Prior to 2009, the restrictions on travel were not so strict. As long as the border country was the final destination and the travel was going to be solely by land, anyone could pretty much get in and out of the country with nothing more than a drivers license. As long as the identification was government issued and valid, there would be no problems.

The new laws that went into effect in June 2009 make it mandatory for any traveler, even those going to border countries or cruises will now need passport documentation to get back into the country. The events of September 11th have changed the world forever. It may have taken a while for the actual law to go into place, but make no mistake that those terrorist events were the inspiration for travel laws like this.

According to the U.S State Department and the Department of Homeland Security, the new border laws are part of a widespread attempt to tighten border security and curb illegal immigration. Since it is often times easier to illegally enter border nations like Mexico and Canada, it would be conceivably possibly for a terrorist or otherwise unsavory character to enter a boarder nation and then cross into America with a fraudulent driver’s license. Passports are more difficult than driver’s licenses to counterfeit and are therefore better for security.

Although citizens of the country should understand this, for some reason they are more worried about convenience than they are safety. For many, the process of getting a passport to travel to a country that they used to drive into several times a month is a major issue. They think that it is just plain silly to have to carry a passport to Canada or Mexico.

The State Department and the Department of Homeland Security maintain that these new regulations are the best way to curb the flow of dangerous illegal immigrants. Although the new law is certainly inconvenient to some, the benefits of the added security outweigh any personal inconvenience. Still, the Department of State is offering some new innovations to make the transition a bit smoother.

One such innovation is the new passport card. The passport card is a wallet-sized card that displays a person’s relevant passport information without the large passport stamp book. A passport card is a valid passport to Canada, Mexico and certain Caribbean Islands for land and sea travel. Passport cards are available to current passport holders for $20.

It should be apparent to everyone that these measures are in place for our safety. We may not like having to carry a Pasport Card to Canada, but it beats the alternative of having our borders being completely open. Instead, a small inconvenience adds a heightened level of security and a little piece of mind to everyone that lives in the United States. Research rush United States passports today!
