Flights To Madrid

If you’re travelling from an eastern state you’ll find that you can get to Madrid as cheaply as you can fly to California – perhaps even cheaper if you pick up a last minute flight (see sidebar for last minute deals on flights).

Madrid, Spain is steeped in culture and a gorgeous place to stop, sight-see and shop when traveling in Europe. From the medieval architecture and stunning cathedrals to the new skyscrapers and nightclubs it is evident that the city is both ancient and alive.

Over the years Madrid has transformed from the sleepy little town that once took afternoon siestas to a bustling cosmopolitan world destination. Should you visit today you’ll find that very few restaurants and shops actually shut down for the mid-day break.

Travel to Madrid is at its best during the spring or in the fall. At those times you’ll find perfect weather – neither too hot nor too cold – and great rates on air travel. From May-June and again from September-October you’ll find the best weather (light sweater in the evenings) and the smallest collection of crowds.

September and October temperatures generally sit in the mid-seventies range (Fahrenheit) and in May-June the average temperature is similar. By July and August you could find yourself in a steaming hot city which personally I’ve never found pleasant. If you like the heat, get on the beach and stay out of the cities. In Spain, during August, it gets so hot that many locals will leave the city and spend time in summer homes in the mountains or cruise Mediterranean coast.

If you’re flying into Spain the closest airport for Madrid’s incoming flights is Barajas International Airport (IATA: MAD) – just 20 minutes by taxi from Madrid. Cabs to many of the hotels and resorts will cost about $35. If you’re planning on driving while you’re there, pick up a rental car at the airport for less than $40 day. Take note however that the highway speed limit is 75 miles per hour

All US citizens require a passport when traveling to or staying in Madrid. Be sure to keep it on you at all times. You never know when you’ll be asked to show your identification at the train stations, in banks, or even just on the streets of Madrid. Finally, if you’re visiting during spring, be aware of the local time change or you could be late for your flight home.
