In translation Cinque means "five", and terre means "lands". Together they equate to a vacation experience of the "Five Lands".
When you visit the Cinque Terre you will wander through and fall in love with five villages. Each village appears to be suspended between sea and earth with buildings built into and standing the test of centuries, cliffs, small mountains and green hills, directly on the coast.
You will notice that the listing at right contains six (6) towns and not just the five (5) of the known Cinque Terre. We have done this as many of our readers have requested the inclusion of Levanto. Levanto is often used as the starting point of the journey or the end. Either way adding this town to your slow travel of Italy's unspoiled territory will be well received by all travelers.

The Cinque Terre (pronounced by locals and Italian speaking travelers as CHEEN-kweh TEHR-reh) is the name of the region that includes five small inter-linked villages. These villages exist along the eastern Ligurian coast.
The "cinque" (5) villages that make up the increasingly popular Cinque Terre are:
- Monterosso al Mare
- Vernazza
- Corniglia
- Manarola
- Riomaggiore
No matter which way you choose to tackle your trek, hike, or exploration of the area we highly suggest adding Levanto to your itinerary - residing in the north.
