Backpack or Cruise Europe?

cruise europe or backpack?

I’ve already backpacked through Europe and the UK for the past three summers on a budget. Not a starving college kid’s budget, mind you, but staying in cheaper Bed and Breakfasts, eating at mediocre restaurants, using public transportation, and so on.

I’ve noticed that there are cruise lines traveling through Europe and the UK (England anyway). Are these a better bet travelwise?

They look pretty affordable, but I’m worried that in the long run I’ll spend more money.

For example, I know on cruises that your meals are included with the cruise fare, which is great, but when you are on a 7 day cruise, and 6 of those days are port days, from 7 am to 5 pm, it seems to me I’ll have to pay for my meals while I’m in port, which seems to defeat the purpose of all inclusive food on cruise.

Any suggestions or comments on this? Things I haven’t thought of? New angles to look at?

  1. I don’t think you can beat the way you have been traveling. The cruise ships don’t cover activities in the ports, which is where your rack up a bill if you want to see anything. Also if you drink most ships charge you a lot for drinks. You are also at the mercy of the ships schedule. I have traveled both ways and really don’t like the cruises because I am always son the go. The cruises are good if you want to lay around a lot and eat. Europe, as you know, has excellent rail and bus service and it is hard to beat. Enjoy your traveling however you decide to go!!!
